Although there are thousands of recipes on this site suitable for autumn cooking, below are links to some specially selected recipes using the freshest and best autumn  ingredients including meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, many of which also include additional useful and informative editorials.

As well as more substantial  "warmers", we’ve also included some lighter recipes  in case of Indian summers which can last through to October.

Damsons

An autumn fruit, damsons are at their best in September. They can be substituted in many recipes using plums although when using in dessert recipes, a little more sugar should be used to compensate for their tartness.

Florence Fennel

Whilst Florence fennel can be bought throughout the year, it is at its best in late summer/autumn and can be relatively easily grown at home.

Horseradish

Horseradish is actually classed as a perennial herb rather than a vegetable.  It has large, fleshy roots which are grown for their pungent, aromatic flavour.

Truffles

Truffles have always been a highly prized fungi. From the same family as morel mushrooms, they are in season between August and February.

Red Grouse

Although you can buy frozen Grouse throughout the year, fresh wild Red Grouse is only available from late August through to December as these birds cannot be artificially reared due to their dependence on moorland heather for survival. A truly seasonal game bird.
