Basic Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

50g/2oz Butter

1 Large Onion, chopped

2 teasp Tomato Paste

2 tbsp Wine Vinegar

1 tbsp Lemon Juice

2 tbsp Demerara Sugar

2 teasp English Mustard
1 tbsp Runny Honey
teasp Dried Mixed Herbs
1 teasp Chilli Powder
240ml/8 fl.oz. Water

 

Instructions

 

1. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the onions and fry gently until soft and transparent.

 

2. Add the remaining ingredients, stir well and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until well blended and syrupy. 

 

Serve hot with meats, poultry,  kebabs, burgers and vegetables.

Simmer - To maintain the temperature of a liquid at just below boiling.

 

Tips, Options and Substitutions

 

If the sauce hasn't thickened after 10 minutes, increase the heart and boil for a few minutes. It should lightly coat the back of a wooden spoon.
