Instructions 1. Place the bread in a bowl together with the milk and leave for 30 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, melt half the butter in a pan. Sprinkle on the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add the stock, stirring all the time and cook over a medium heat until thickened.
3. Add the tomatoes , sugar and thyme to the sauce. Season well, cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
4. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas mark 4. In a bowl, mix together the mince, onion, soaked bread (together with the milk), paprika, salt and pepper. Using dampened hands, roll the mixture into balls about the size of a large walnut.
5. Heat the remaining butter and oil in a very large frying pan and brown the meatballs on all sides, in batches if necessary.
6. Place the meatballs in a shallow ovenproof dish, in a single layer. Pour over the tomato sauce, cover and bake for 30 minutes. Serve hot.
