Date and Cheese Bread   Veg   HT   CD CBF  60mins plus proving

Makes one 450g/1lb loaf     Hot  Cold  Vegetarian Fruit  Savoury Bread    Baked Fayre   

 

Ingredients:

225g/8oz. Plain Flour

100g/4oz. Cheddar Cheese, grated

2 teaspoons Baking Powder

50g/2oz. Dates, stoned and chopped

1 teaspoon Dry Mustard

½ teaspoon Salt

50g/2oz. Butter

Black Pepper

150ml/5fl.oz. Milk

2 Eggs, beaten

 

Instructions

 

1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas mark 5 and grease and flour a 1lb Loaf tin. Sift the flour, baking powder, mustard, salt and pepper into a bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingertips then stir in the grated cheese and chopped dates.

 

2. Set aside 2 teaspoons of the beaten egg for brushing and combine the remainder with the milk. Add to the dry ingredients and beat thoroughly.

 

3. Spoon the mixture into the loaf tin. Brush with beaten egg and bake in the centre of the oven for 45 minutes until golden brown and firm to the touch. Serve either hot or cold, sliced and buttered.
