Traditional Apple Pie Veg HT CD DP British 60mins Serve 4 Hot Cold Dried Fruit Vegetarian Dessert Puddings Britain Europe
Ingredients 225g/8oz Plain Flour A pinch of Salt 100g/4oz Margarine 675g/1˝lb Cooking Apples e.g. Bramleys 100g/4oz Brown Sugar 1/2 teasp Ground Cinnamon 1/2 teasp Grated Nutmeg 1/4 teasp Ground cloves 50g/2oz Sultanas 1 Egg Yolk A little Milk 1 tbsp Caster Sugar
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 400F, 200C, Gas mark 6.
2. Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl and rub in the butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add enough water to make a firm dough.
3. Peel, core and thickly slice the apples into a bowl. Add the brown sugar, spices and sultanas and mix well. Place in a buttered pie dish and sprinkle with 2 tbsp of water.
4. Roll out the pastry and cover the pie dish, trimming any excess pastry off with a knife. Decorate the top with leaves or other shapes made out of the pastry trimmings. Brush with the egg yolk and milk mixture, sprinkle with caster sugar.
5. Cook in the centre of the oven for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 350F, 180C, Gas mark 4 and cook for a further 20 minutes.
