The F A Premiership was formed in 1993 by the then top
clubs in the Football League Division One. The principal reason for them
breaking away from the football league was to gain more control over television
rights to show live matches, which was expected to increase coverage revenue
into the clubs with satellite companies such as Sky vying for the rights.
