Whilst there are Freshwater species of mussels, these are generally not used for culinary purposes so the mussels you will find in fishmongers and shops are invariably seawater (marine) species.

What are Mussels?

Mussels are bivalve molluscs which group includes scallops, clams and oysters and are found  in oceans worldwide and are also farmed - perhaps the most famous being New Zealand green-lipped mussel.
