Fishing Waters

Plaice is a flatfish belonging to the family Pleuronectidae (a flounder) and is easily identified by its red /orange spots and smooth brown skin.

 

They are a seawater (marine) fish found in the European shelf from the Barents Sea to the Mediterranean, North Pacific and North Atlantic. Classed as an "White" fish,  they have a mild sweet flavour and soft texture and can reach sizes up to 70cm/28 inches though many are sold at  around 30cm/12-inches.   Often considered as the poor man's Sole, they are a popular fish in parts of Europe often filleted, battered or bread crumbed and fried however they make a very good substitute in sole recipes.

 

Suitable substitutes for include Dab, Flounder, Sole.
