Fishing Waters

Although mackerel is a  round bodied fish belonging to the family Scombridae, they generally have a slim, cylindrical shape with distinctive blue-green striped markings and no scales.

They are a seawater (marine) fish found in all temperate seas. Classed as an "oily" fish, the flesh is pale and firm and prized for its oily texture. Tinned Mackerel is also quite popular and readily available.

Suitable substitutes for mackerel include herring, tuna, shad and trout.
