History
MotoGP is the world’s premier motorcycling championship, with a season of 18
Grand Prix races taking place in 14 countries. The motorcycles ridden are
purpose-built racing prototypes which are unavailable for purchase by the
general public. They cannot even be ridden on public roads (legally).
The roots of MotoGP lay in the Grand Prix Road-Racing
World Championship which was first organised by the Fédération Internationale de
Motocyclisme (FIM) in 1949, making it the oldest motor sport World Championship
in existence. Between then and now many changes have taken place with
regards to bike specifications, for example at the end of the 1968 season,
gearboxes were limited to 6 speeds and 500cc categories (the equivalent to
today's MotoGP category) to no more than four cylinders.

The 500cc/MotoGP class has produced some truly stunning riders over
the years, some of whom stayed at the top of their game for a long
time with names such as Surtees,
Hailwood and Rossi
indelibly etched in the hearts of fans, but in particular
Giacomo Agostini
who won the title 8 times from 1966 to 1975.

In 2002 further revised regulations allowed for the
participation of bikes with four-stroke engines. The 2007 season brought
in the adaptation of MotoGP bikes from 990cc engine capacity to 800cc which
resulted in more competitive races with the bikes achieving higher corner
speeds.
