National Watermelon Day
3rd August is Watermelon Day, and is a good time to celebrate and enjoy these wonderful fruit whilst they are in season. Popular the world over, today there are more than 1,200 varieties of watermelons grown worldwide in 96 countries Watermelons (C. lanatus ) are believed to be native to Africa where melons grows wild and have been a welcome source of water in the diet of the indigenous people for centuries. Although it's not known when watermelons were first cultivated, there is evidence dating back to the 2000BC of its cultivation in the Nile Valley and watermelon seeds were found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun. By the 10th century AD, watermelons were certainly being cultivated in China, and the Moors introduced it to Europe in the 13th century.
Nutritionally, watermelons contain Vitamins A, B6 and C, Potassium and a higher concentration of lycopene which has antioxidant capabilities, than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. It also contains the amino acids citrulline and arginine which are thought to maintain blood flow and heart health.
