Onion Sauce

This is a traditional sauce based on a white sauce made with milk wit the addition of chopped onion which is fried until soft but not coloured, most often served with boiled meats such as ham or corned beef. Sometimes mustard and/or freshly chopped parsley is also added. Very popular in British cooking.

Ingredients

1 Large Onion, finely chopped

50g/2 oz Butter

25g/1 oz Flour

480ml/16 fl.oz Milk

 

 

Instructions

 

 

1. Fry the onion in the butter until soft and transparent but not coloured.

 

2. Add the flour and cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly, then add the milk  a little at a time and cook until thickened.

 

Serve with  boiled or steamed vegetables. Can also be served with bacon chops, gammon  steaks, boiled bacon or pork.
