Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship

Go to:-      Sporting Events Main Page

Wimbledon is one of the five "Grand Slam" tournaments along with The French Open, The US Open and The Australian Open, and is considered to be one of the most prestigious tennis championships in the world. Attracting the best tennis players worldwide and with prize money of £700,000 for the winners of the men's and ladies singles finals, so it should be.  Such is the popularity of the Wimbledon Championship that the majority of Centre, No.1 and No.2 Court tickets are sold via a public ballot in advance.

Founded in 1868 the club which runs the tournament was originally called  'The All England Croquet Club'. However,  in 1877 the club was renamed 'The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club'.

The famous Centre Court where the finals are played gets its name from the way the lawns at the Ground are arranged, with centre court being surrounded by  19 other courts.

Strawberries have become closely associated with the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, with vendors strolling around selling them to the spectators.  A very English  summer fruit which is popular with the nation on the whole. Whilst they are traditionally eaten at Wimbledon just as they come raw with thick cream, here are 3 more unusual recipes using fresh strawberries for you to try.
