At some point or other, many students will be faced with a kitchen which is only
fitted out with some basics such as a cooker, fridge, freezer and possibly a
microwave. Below is a list of items which you will need in order to prepare and
cook a variety of meals.
Essential Cooking Equipment For Students

Saucepans - including a frying pan and 2-3 saucepans preferably with lids
Knives - including a small vegetable (paring) knife, a medium/large
chopping (chefs) knife and a serrated carving knife doubles up as a bread
knife
Wooden spoons - 1 or 2 will suffice
Peeler for potatoes and other veggies and used for cheese shavings
Tongs
Grater
Can and Bottle opener - you can get one utensil which does both
Mixing Bowls - 2 to 3 ranging from small to large
Measuring Jug
Sieve or colander handy for draining pasta and vegetables
Chopping Board
Salt and Pepper Set
Crockery, Glasses and Cutlery

Although the list may seem quite long, it is possible to buy starter kits which
will include many of the items in one pack and usually at a reasonable price. If
your budget is really tight, the most obvious way of getting kitchen equipment
is to get bits from people you know - your parents being the obvious. Youll be
surprised at the amount of spare kitchen equipment most people have which they
dont particularly need or want. You can also try checking out charity shops
which often have odd bits and bobs at very low prices in particular cutlery,
crockery and glasses.

Other Handy Kitchen Equipment For Students

Kettle you can boil water in a saucepan but a kettle is easier
Toaster
Wok although not essential, wok cooking is an easy and simple cooking
method
Hand Held Blender great for soups, sauces and dips and relatively cheap
Set of Measuring Spoons
Pepper mill with a supply of black peppercorns
Ovenproof Dish - great for pasta bakes or casseroles
Flat Baking Tray useful for things like pizzas. Before you spend any
money on one, check inside the oven as many cookers come with one
